HUD Administrator Embezzled $30K: Feds

A local HUD administrator responsible for finding housing for people with HIV/AIDS was sentenced in federal court for embezzlement.

NEW HAVEN, CT— A city man has been sentenced to three years' probation for embezzling more than $30,000 from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development program, according to a statement from federal prosecutors.

Steven Harvin, 54, will serve the first 60 days of the sense in home confinement and must also perform 50 hours of community service.

Harvin was president of Zezzo House, a non-profit organization in Hartford that provides housing for individuals and families with health challenges, including HIV/AIDS in 2015-2016. He was responsible for distributing Section 8 grants to recipients.

However, federal prosecutors said he diverted those funds for personal use, misappropriating a total of $32,854 in this time.

This matter was investigated by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Inspector General, and the Hartford Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel.
