Inmate Dies, Investigation Launched

NEW HAVEN, CT — The state Department of Correction is investigating after an inmate died following an incident.

The inmate refused to exit a shower are around 6:45 a.m. Thursday.

"After several attempts, responding staff members were able to restrain the offender in the facility’s medical unit," said Andrius Banevicius, spokesman for the department.

Shortly after the inmate became unresponsive. Staff performed lifesaving measures and called 911. The inmate was taken to a local emergency room and was pronounced dead at 9:40 a.m.

State Police are also investigating the incident. A correction lieutenant has been placed on administrative leave.
