Long Wharf Theatre Continues A Journey Forward

Long Wharf Theatre is just weeks away from announcing our 23/24 season.

Long Wharf Theatre is just weeks away from announcing our 23/24 season. Expect to be enthralled with boundary-breaking experiences. As a theatre of possibility, we hope our line-up of shows expands our collective imagination of what theatre can be. We remain committed to bringing you compelling stories with some of the best artists working in the American theatre today.

As you know, we said goodbye to our longtime home this past December. Rather than being anchored to one performance space, we are activating the “stages” of our city and region to, hopefully, make our work more accessible and bring theatre to all people. To help tell our story, we enlisted the support of visionary filmmaker, Travis Carbonella. Travis has been a stalwart supporter of us and we’re deeply grateful for our ongoing partnership with such a talented local artist. Together we have made this video that we hope captures how our new model is an invitation to build on Long Wharf Theatre’s history and charts a path to our sustainability.

We are moving forward through a series of phases. This past season, what we called “phase one,” was a year of listening, learning, and finding the different performance spaces available to us. We intentionally scaled back our programming to make room for moving out of our rented building and setting up our new administrative offices in the historic Audubon Arts District in downtown New Haven. Phase one has also been about building bridges throughout the community and talking with our neighbors across our region. Maybe you saw our team marching in the Freddy Fixer Parade on Dixwell Avenue or maybe you saw the blistering Live From The Edge by Universes at Space Ballroom. Deep and meaningful ties with our community inspires the work we do.

Phase two, our upcoming season in 23/24, will be about fully embracing our new model; we’ll diligently explore the opportunities and challenges that come with this approach. We will continue to cultivate our community connections and engage with all of you, our audiences.

As we move into phase three, marking our 60th anniversary in 24/25, we will assess the need to evolve the model based on what we learn and the feedback we receive. We are leaving room for flexibility while being planful for our future.

As always, we truly hope you’ll come on the journey with us. Together, we are charting a bold new path that builds on our legacy as a trailblazing theatre company. When we center possibility, nothing is off limits. We are on our way.
