Man, 25, Charged in Late August Derby Ave. Daytime Robbery, Murder Of 42-year-Old Ichon Ringwood: PD

NEW HAVEN, CT—A 25-year-old New Haven man was charged with murder, and his bond is set at $2 million for the daytime robbery and slaying of Ichon Ringwood, 42, on Derby Avenue last month, police said.

On Aug. 20 at around 10:30 a.m., cops were called to a shooting outside the Berger Apartments. When they got there, they found Ringwood lying in the vestibule of the apartment building suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the initial investigation indicated that there was a dispute in front of the building during which the suspect fired several rounds, police said.

The case was assigned to New Haven police Major Crime Unit Detective Jeremy Cordero, who developed probable cause to arrest Bailey Gattert and charge him with murder, murder in the commission of a felony, first-degree robbery, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal liability for acts of another. All are felonies.

Video showed Gattert firing one round that struck Ringwood, police said.

Gattert has a lengthy arrest and conviction record, according to judicial records and previous reporting. Those convictions include sexual assault, escaping from prison, drug cases, larceny, and car theft, among others.

Thursday, New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli provided an update on the case. Members of Ringwood's family were in attendance.

"For anyone who's gone through this, it's not easy. New Haven has gotten badder because of senseless gun violence," Ringwood's brother said. "This is hard. He and I were sometimes inseparable."
