Man Charged After Causing Disturbance at New Haven Courthouse: PD

Some people were injured as a mass of individuals attempted to run out of the court room, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A Portland man was charged after he caused a disturbance at the New Haven Superior Court building that led to some minor injuries during a panic, according to State Police.

State Police responded to court room A in the Elm Street courthouse on a report of a disturbance.

Matthew Cherackal was chanting and refused to leave the court when ordered by a judge, police said.

"After creating alarm and confusion, individuals attempted to run out of the room, causing some individuals to suffer minor injuries," said Trooper First Class Carl Schlicker, who investigated the incident.

Cherackal was taken into custody and charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, assault on public safety personnel, and second-degree breach of peace. He was held on a $200,000 court set bond.
