NEW HAVEN, CT — A 30-year-old mother carrying groceries was shot Tuesday morning as she crossed the street with her two-year-old child, NBC Connecticut reports.

The mother was shot in the back as she crossed Grand Avenue, NBC CT reports. She was released from the hospital and her child was not injured.

Police are investigating and don't believe she was the target.
