New Haven Ballet to Present DanceAIR Spring Community Performance in Fair Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT — April 2026

New Haven Ballet will present the DanceAIR Spring Community Performance on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Fair Haven School Auditorium, 164 Grand Avenue. This free event highlights the progress and dedication of students participating in the DanceAIR program, which brings dance instruction and performance opportunities into local schools and community centers across New Haven.

About the Performance

The evening offers families, friends, and neighbors an opportunity to come together in support of young dancers as they share what they have learned throughout the year. Students will perform with focus and confidence, many taking the stage in front of a live audience for the first time.

Participating schools and community programs include Truman School, Edgewood School, Barack Obama Magnet University School (BOMU), Lincoln-Bassett School, Fair Haven School, Highville Charter School, and Q House.

The performance will also feature students appearing alongside members of the New Haven Ballet Company in a professionally staged presentation. Scholarships will be awarded to promising students who wish to continue their training at New Haven Ballet School.

About DanceAIR

DanceAIR brings dance instruction into schools and community centers throughout New Haven, offering students the opportunity to train, build confidence, express creativity, and perform.

The program serves approximately 100 students annually across six New Haven public elementary schools and the Dixwell Community House (Q House), reaching children in Dixwell, Fair Haven, Hill North, Newhallville, West River/Dwight, and West Rock/West Hills.

Students participate in weekly ballet classes over at least 16 weeks, led by Children’s Division Director Timothy Fountain, whose training includes the American Ballet Theatre Teacher Training Program. For many students, DanceAIR is their first experience in a structured arts program.

Student Experience & Impact

“The long term impact of DanceAIR is visible,” said Artistic Director Lisa Kim. “We are already seeing students who began in the program continue their training and grow into strong, committed dancers. It all starts with access, encouragement, and opportunity. That first moment of stepping on stage can change what a young person believes is possible.”

Each class is led by Children’s Division Director Timothy Fountain. “Working with DanceAIR students brings me tremendous joy,” he said. “Their dedication and growth over the course of the program is inspiring. Audiences will see students take the stage with confidence, many performing in front of a live audience for the very first time.”

Community Partnership

DanceAIR is presented in partnership with New Haven Public Schools and the City of New Haven Police Department.

The program reflects New Haven Ballet’s commitment to expanding access to the arts and creating pathways for continued training and artistic growth.
