New Haven Bar Serving Hull’s Has Been “Swamped” Since Re-Launch

Three Sheets general manager says people have been lining up to have a sip of the old-time New Haven made beer.

NEW HAVEN, CT - The re-launching of Hull’s beer got a lot of attention when it was announced last week. Well, it isn’t just the beer that has gotten a lot of buzz but also the bar that is serving it.

Hull’s was re-launched last Friday at Three Sheets bar (the old Rudy's) on Elm Street in New Haven on Friday night.

On Saturday, the day after the launching party, people were waiting to get into the bar before we opened,” said Paul Angelo, general manager of Three Sheets, in an interview on Tuesday.

Angelo added: “People seem really excited to have Hull’s back - and we’re glad to be the bar that helped bring them back.”

Angelo said he believes Three Sheets was picked as the bar to launch Hull’s back into the market “because we kind of have that nostalgic feel here.” He added that it didn’t hurt that Hull’s distributor - Star Distributors of West Haven - also has a tie to Three Sheets.

Angelo said that those coming into Three Sheets to have a glass of Hull’s “are a little bit of an older crowd. Some say they drank Hull’s back in the day.”

The man who re-launched Hull’s is Chuck DelVecchio.

In an earlier interview with Patch, he said why he did it. "I grew up I New Haven, went to Career High School, went to UConn," said DelVecchio, who said he has resigned from his position at a national accounting firm to pursue his dream of reviving the Hull’s brand.

"Growing up I heard stories from my family reminiscing about Hull’s,” DelVecchio said.

Hull's Beer started in 1872 and was once the dominant beer in Greater New Haven - and far beyond. It was rolled off the loading docks and into bars all over southern New England every day. You couldn't get fresher beer any day of the week than Hull's on tap. Unfortunately, the young jock market was swept away by the dazzle of the 70's TV commercials put out by Michelob, Coors, Heineken, Lowenbrau, Budweiser and others.

Hull's was housed in an imposing brick building on Congress Avenue in New Haven - a building that has long been demolished. At one time, Hull's was also the distributor of Guinness Stout.

DelVecchio said that when he decided to re-launch the brand, "I focused on brewing a historically accurate beer that is true to the original.” To ensure he did so, DelVecchio enlisted the help of Overshores Brewing Company in East Haven to contract the beer.

DelVecchio said the beer will initially be available in cans but draft will be coming soon. You can always stop by Three Sheets in the meantime, if you are thirsting for a Hull’s.“
