New Haven Blizzard Update: 16" Of Snow, Digging Out, NHPS Closed Tuesday, SCSU Closed, Parking Ban In Effect
In the aftermath of the blizzard that blanketed New Haven with nearly 2' of snow, it's all about snow operations with 800+ roads to plow.

NEW HAVEN, CT—Update from Mayor Elicker:
"The storm is now behind us, but the snow cleanup continues.
The citywide parking ban remains in effect. Snow crews are continuing to work through the night to clear streets, widen lanes and push the snow back farther towards the curb. I know it can be frustrating as you wait for plows to clear your street or push back snow. We haven’t seen a storm this large in a very long time, and our crews are working around the clock. So, thanks for your patience.
Similarly, if you haven’t shoveled your sidewalk yet, please do so. And, if you can, lend a helping hand to our seniors or other neighbors who might have difficulty shoveling. Please also clear around fire hydrants and bus stops if they are located near your home too, so your neighbors can safely get to where they need to go safely.
A few notes on various openings and closings for Tuesday:
- City Hall, libraries and many other municipal buildings will be open.
- Senior centers will remain closed.
- New Haven Public Schools will be closed, as crews continue to clear snow in and around city schools and lots. Kids, yes, another snow day! Parents, sorry, another snow day.
- Trash and recycling will resume on Tuesday morning – but remember all pickups are delayed by one day. So, if your bins were supposed to be out today on Monday, they go out tomorrow on Tuesday. If they usually go out Tuesday, they go out Wednesday – and so on.
Thanks, everyone, for your continued patience and cooperation. Our crews will continue to work through the night and we’re keeping at it. Have a good night."

Original story:
With snow still falling and the wind still blowing, more than 16 inches of heavy wet snow have fallen on the city "so far" at noon, with more snow yet to fall, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said in a noon update.
He said snow is forecast to fall throughout the afternoon, "strong wind gusts will remain through the early evening, and the temperatures will feel like they're in the low single digits."
Elicker said city "snow crews and plows have been working 24/7, but given the size and duration of the storm and the amount of total snowfall, this will take a significant amount of time for our crews to clear the city’s 800-plus roads."
Elicker said that unless absolutely necessary, people should stay off the roads: "Folks should be prepared to hunker down and stay at home for some time."
He asks that once the snow has tapered off, residents should be "good neighbors" and shovel sidewalks and street corners so there is a path at least three feet wide to ensure wheelchair and stroller access."

And asks that residents whose houses are near fire hydrants, "Please give the fire department a helping hand by shoveling at least three feet around any fire hydrants outside your home so that they can access them quickly in the event of an emergency."
Regardless, he said, "Citations will be given out to those who do not shovel their properties."
Anyone with time-sensitive, snow-related concerns or questions, call the city’s Emergency Operations Center at 203-946-8221. Elicker said the city's Emergency Operations Center is staffed with representatives from various city departments and partner organizations throughout the duration of the storm to respond to pressing issues.
For life-threatening emergencies, call 911.

Yale University update:
As we continue to monitor winter storm conditions, we are writing with an update on campus operations. Blizzard conditions are expected to continue for the next few hours. Snow removal efforts are affecting travel and parking in many parts of New Haven and across campus.
As an academic and residential campus, Yale must maintain critical operations. Our emergency planning and operations teams continue to work closely with departments to support these functions while prioritizing the safety of our community.
Some university operations must be conducted in person. Other operations and services may be performed from home when necessary. We encourage managers to reach out to their teams and allow those who can complete their work remotely to continue to do so.
For tomorrow, Tuesday, February 24, we encourage classes that can be held remotely to move to an online format. We recognize that some labs and courses require an in-person format. We ask that faculty communicate directly with their students about the status of their courses.
Please note that parking availability remains limited, as several Yale lots are being used by the City of New Haven for snow operations. Those who must come to campus should allow extra time and plan accordingly.
We will continue to evaluate conditions and will provide updates if circumstances change. Please monitor the Yale Status Board https://statusboard.apps.yale.edu/ for the latest information. We are grateful to the faculty and staff whose dedication and flexibility help keep the university operating safely during weather events.
Southern Connecticut State University will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 24, due to ongoing storm cleanup efforts.
This decision reflects our continued commitment to campus safety and operational readiness, allowing our facilities team the necessary time to thoroughly clear campus walkways and parking areas. It also gives our community the opportunity to adjust plans for university events and to attend to other essential responsibilities, such as family care and snow removal.
All classes and events, both in-person and online, are canceled for the day. Buley Library will remain closed. If your media outlet has a weather closing portal, it has been updated to reflect this closing.
Tweed New Haven Airport is set to reopen at 8 p.m. Monday, according to its social media.
