New Haven Coronavirus: Yale Rejects Federal Aid

Yale University will join other private universities with large endowments in not pursuing federal relief.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Yale University will not seek funds from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, according to The Middletown Press. Yale joins Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton in turning down the aid, after private universities with the nation's largest endowments came under fire for taking millions of dollars.

Yale was eligible for $6.9 million in emergency aid, but officials said the university hopes the federal government will use part of that funding "to support colleges and universities in Connecticut whose continued existence is threatened by the current crisis."

Yale is planning a 5 percent budget cut for the coming year, including a hiring freeze and salary freeze, according to The Middletown Press.
