New Haven Detective Seriously Injured in Crash, Scooter Driver Charged: PD

The incident occurred in late November and the detective remains out of work.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A West Haven man was arrested after he seriously injured a police officer directing traffic in November, police said.

Detective Juan Ingles was directing traffic on Kimberly Avenue beneath I-91 when he was hit by a scooter Nov. 28, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

He fractured a disc in his spine, had three herniated discs and a concussion as a result of the crash. He remains out of work and it's unclear when he will be well enough to return.

The area was marked as a construction zone.

Thomas Greatsinger, 70, was found to be under the influence of cocaine and cannabinoids at the time of the crash, Hartman said. Additionally he was never issued a Connecticut driver's license and his scooter, which had a motor with a displacement greater than 49cc was never registered.

He was also found to be traveling unreasonably fast in the construction zone, Hartman said. He was charged with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, DUI, striking an officer with a vehicle and motor vehicle crimes.
