With New Haven, Hartford Closings, Blue State Coffee Cafes Are No More

The blue chairs were empty outside the last of the cafés in New Haven as doors to the Orange Street shop were set to close for good at 5 pm.

NEW HAVEN, CT — On a crisp, chilly autumn Thursday, the Blue State Coffee café on Orange Street in New Haven was filled with customers. That it would be their last day in the coffee shop likely wasn't lost on the patrons, as the signage on the door explained.

The Blue State Coffee café is closing permanently as of 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 17. Thank you for your patronage and for making us a part of your lives. We have loved being your neighborhood coffee shop!
Since our founding in 2004, we have prioritized our mission of creating a ripple effect of positive change across communities. We are grateful to the New Haven community, our wonderful customers and our amazing managers and baristas for helping us fulfill our mission. With all of your help, Blue State Coffee has donated over $1 million to local nonprofits.
Blue State Coffee grew to have nine cafés in three states over the last 18 years we are so proud of this company, and is a family owned business, we feel it is the right time to make this change.
We will miss you!
We wish you all the best from the Blue State Coffee family.

Last month, as was reported by Yale Daily News, Blue State then announced the closing of three of its four New Haven locations. Now, as the last of the New Haven Blue State Coffee cafés shutters, so too does its downtown Hartford location, and its Providence, RI café, too.

The Yale Daily News reported that Common Grounds would take overthe York Street, Wall Street, and Congress Avenue cafés, which closed for good last month.

Meanwhile, staffers at the 777 Main St., Hartford café, which opened in 2015, were told Monday the location would close Thursday, according to a New Haven Biz report.

Though the cafés are now, or soon to be shuttered, devotees may, for a limited time, still purchase Blue State Coffee and associated merch on its website here.
