New Haven Man, 50, Charged With Murder In Fatal January Shooting: PD

Police said during an argument over money owed Alexander Pedraza was shot and killed. Leonardo Cantres was charged, held on $2M bail: PD.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 50-year-old New Haven man was charged with murder in the Jan. 18 fatal shooting of Alexander Pedraza near River and James streets, police said.

Police said that Pedraza and Leonard Cantres were arguing over money Cantres owed the man when Pedraza was shot. Taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, he died from his injuries, police said.

With "a positive ID" from witnesses, video images and DNA evidence, on April 10, police secured a warrant for Cantres charging him with murder, criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit.

On April 12, Cantres was arrested without incident on the New Haven Green, police said.

A convicted felon, police said, and court records show, he was held on a $2 million court-set bail.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said the arrest marks the "eighth homicide case closed this year."

Pedraza's family, including his parents and his wife thanked investigators for doing a "great job."

"God bless you guys," his wife said.
