New Haven Mom Left Child, Infant Home Alone: PD

The children were left alone for at least 30 minutes, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A city woman was arrested after she left her two young children unattended in her apartment Thursday morning, according to police.

A housing inspector conducting a visit found a child present at the door of a Sherman Avenue apartment, but no adults were there, said Capt. Anthony Duff, police spokesman.

The inspector and property manager alerted police after they entered the apartment. They were present for about 30 minutes before the mother returned after she was notified. The children are 3-years-old and 4-months-old.

Chantell Hamilton, 28, was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor. She told police that she let the children to run an errand to court, Duff said.

The state Department of Children and Families took temporary custody of the children.
