New Haven Mosque Fire Investigated As Potential Arson

Evidence suggests that a mosque fire in New Haven was intentionally set, according to the city's fire chief.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A mosque fire in New Haven appears to have been intentionally set, according to New Haven Fire Chief John Alston.

A fire broke out Sunday at Diyanet Mosque, according to the New Haven Register. Several area churches have offered space for the congregation to worship while the mosque is repaired. The fire occurred during Ramadan.

The fire is believed to have started near the entrance and one person was inside the building. The fire eventually spread to the second floor, according to WTNH.

No one was hurt in the blaze. The mosque was undergoing construction which was set to be completed months from now.

The Diyanet Mosque of New Haven is affiliated with the Turkish-American Religious Foundation. The fire broke out around 4 p.m., according to the group's Facebook page. The Diyanet Center is accepting donations to help support the mosque.
