Update: Funeral Details For NHPD Officer Who Died From Cancer

A married father of 2, NHPD officer since 2014, Michael Hinton lost his 1 1/2-year battle with cancer. Funeral details have been released.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A married father of two young children and a New Haven police officer since 2014, Michael Hinton lost his courageous battle with cancer Sunday.

"The New Haven Police Department mourns the death of Officer Michael Hinton, who died today after a year and a half battle with cancer. Officer Hinton was a dedicated husband, father of two and friend of many. He joined the Police Department in 2014. Officer Hinton inspired us all with his unwavering positive spirit and selfless dedication to his work and family. Rest In Peace brother, we will miss you," New Haven police shared on Facebook.

"It is with immense sadness and a heavy heart that the New Haven Police Department announces the passing of Officer Michael Hinton," police spokesperson Scott Shumway said. "He has been a loyal member of the New Haven Police Department since 2014. Officer Hinton is survived by his wife Genoveva Hinton, his daughter Nora, and his son Michael."

Services for Officer Hinton are to be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022. Calling hours will be held at Iovanne Funeral Home, 11 Wooster Place, New Haven, CT., from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM. A grave-side funeral will follow at Orange Center Cemetery located on Orange Center Road in Orange, CT. at 1:30 PM.

According to a GoFundMe that was created Sept. 29 to help his family as he battled cancer, it's noted that Hinton has fought a courageous fight against the disease for a year and a half even as the cancer spread.

He underwent "multiple surgeries, several types of treatment, and hospital stays. Unfortunately, the cancer has progressed and his health is declining. Through his struggles, Mike is always positive and smiling," the GoFundMe reads.

Then, the worst possible news: "It is with immense sadness and a heavy heart that I inform everyone of the passing Officer Michael Hinton."

Hinton is survived by his wife Veva Alvarez, and children Michael, 4, and Nora, 7.

Described as a police officer and father who'd "stop everything he is doing to help another person in need," he was devoted to his family.

Among his hobbies included working on race cars, and racing at Lebanon Valley Dragway.
