New Haven Prepares For Major Winter Storm: Closings, Cancellations, How To Prepare
Closings due to the major winter storm include New Haven Public Schools, Southern CT State University, and Cornell Scott Hill Health Center.

NEW HAVEN, CT — As what may be a historical storm nationally given its expanse, New Haven is bracing for heavy snow Sunday into Monday with arctic temperatures accompanying the snow.
City officials held a news briefing on winter storm preparations.

An advisory from the City notes that it's "working hard to prepare and respond to this storm, to ensure our residents stay safe and warm, and get our streets are plowed."

In a Facebook post, the city shared graphics and information on closures, including New Haven Public Schools on Monday and some other city services. Among the measures that will affect many, is a full parking ban beginning Saturday night at 10 p.m. with no end day/time as yet.
All City warming centers are open around the clock.

Closings/cancellations
New Haven city buildings, including City Hall and New Haven Free Public Library branches among others are closed Monday, or will have delayed openings.
New Haven Senior Centers and the City's Health and Wellness Center are closed Monday.
As a result of this weekend’s inclement weather forecast, all New Haven Public Schools will be closed on Monday, January 26. This includes before and after school programs.
Due to inclement weather conditions and for the safety of our staff and patients, Cornell Scott Hill Health Center is closed Monday. SCRC, located at 232 Cedar St, New Haven, will remain open. If you or a loved one is having a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 or visit your closest emergency room.
Southern Connecticut State University is closed Sunday and Monday, and all events on those days are canceled.
In the interests of both safety and the need for service partners to plan storm staffing, Yale Center for EMS is closed Monday. All classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The New Haven Pride Center is closed on Monday.
Winter storm tips
- Charge all phones, power banks, tablets, and rechargeable lanterns.
- Fill vehicle gas tanks in case stations lose power.
- Pick up prescriptions and essential medications early.
- Download movies, books, and maps for offline use.
- Identify one warm room in the house to “camp out” if power fails.
- Locate water shut-off valve and breaker box now, not later.
- Set the fridge and freezer to colder settings to hold temperature longer.
- Never run generators or grills inside garages or homes.
- Test smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors.
- Have at least one flashlight and batteries.
- Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.
- Assume downed lines are live and dangerous.
- Bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads freeze first.
- Check on neighbors, especially elderly, by phone if possible.
- Report outages to utility companies.
