New Haven Scholarship Fund Awards $375,000 to 158 Students to Start College

NEW HAVEN, CT — The New Haven Scholarship Fund awarded $375,000 in college scholarships to 158 New Haven students at its annual ceremony on Sunday, June 14, at Wilbur Cross High School.

The scholarship fund offers one-year, renewable scholarships to New Haven residents with demonstrated financial need. The awards vary in size from $300 to $3,000, depending on factors including the student's financial need, the student's academic record, and the funds available.

This year, the fund will give another $250,000 to students who have reapplied.

The scholarship event featured Sen. Richard Blumenthal as guest speaker.

"We are proud that the New Haven Scholarship Fund continues to help so many New Haven students launch their college studies," said NHSF President Jeffrey Alpert. "We thank the many donors who have made gifts large and small to make this work possible."

The New Haven Scholarship Fund started in 1959 when a math teacher at James Hillhouse High School raised $400, matched it with $400 of her own and sent eight students to what was then called Southern Connecticut State College for one year.

Over the course of the 67 years since Jean Paton Lovell began, the fund has awarded $16 million in scholarships to help more than 14,000 New Haven students begin their college journeys.

The fund pursues ongoing fundraising in order to make its awards.
