Three Shot in New Haven Wednesday, One in Critical Condition: Update

Three people were shot within 14 hours in the city and the latest victim is in critical condition.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Police are investigating three separate shootings that occurred Wednesday in the city.

A 30-year-old city man was shot in the abdomen on Hurlburt Street, according to police. Police were dispatched around 5:11 a.m.

The victim was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. He is in stable condition and was able to talk to police, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman. He is recovering from surgery.

A second person was shot shortly before 4 p.m. The city's ShotSpotter system detected several gunshots on Winchester Avenue and Hazel Street. Police then got calls that a victim was shot on Winchester Avenue.

Derrick Smith, 18, of New Haven was shot in the arm and taken to the hospital for treatment. He had an active warrant for carrying a pistol without a permit and is in police custody, Hartman said.

Police were dispatched at 6:36 p.m. for a third reported shooting, this time in the area of Shepard and Newhall streets. The 18-year-old victim was shot several times and is in critical condition.
