New Haven Tax Preparer Committed Fraud: Feds
A former local tax preparer entered a plea in a case in which he is accused of causing losses of more than $550,000.
NEW HAVEN, CT — A former local tax preparer pleaded guilty to charges that he falsely prepared tax returns that resulted in losses of more than $550,000, according to a statement from federal prosecutors. Devon Williams, 30, of Atlanta, pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and assisting the preparation of a false tax return, an offense that carries a maximum term of imprisonment of three years.
Williams formerly owned and operated Perfect Preparers, LLC, a tax preparation business based in New Haven. Between approximately 2014 and 2017, Williams prepared numerous federal tax returns for clients that contained false deductions, including deductions for unreimbursed employee expenses, charitable donations, and mortgage interest, according to the statement.
He is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 2019. Williams is released on a $150,000 bond pending sentencing.
