Hamden Officer-Involved Shooting Investigated In New Haven

The incident involved Hamden and Yale officers in New Haven. Part of the incident was captured on video.

NEW HAVEN, CT — State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Tuesday morning in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Argyle Street. State Police are handling the investigation into the shooting. Part of the incident was captured on video.

A newspaper delivery man reported being robbed with an unknown weapon at the Gas and Go gas station on Arch Street early Tuesday morning, said State Police Trooper Josue Dorelus, police spokesman. Police were on the lookout for a red Honda Civic.

A vehicle matching that description was found near Dixwell Avenue and Argyle Street in New Haven by Hamden Police. Yale University Police also responded to the scene to assist.

Multiple officers arrived and attempted to box the vehicle in and officers gave instructions to the driver on how to exit the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle exited abruptly and turned towards officers, Dorelus said.

Officers from Hamden and Yale fired numerous gunshots. A bullet hit a 22-year-old female passenger in the lower torso. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and is in stable condition. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening. State Police aren't releasing the man's name, the woman's name or the names of officers involved at this time.

Hamden Police Chief John Cappiello said his department will conduct an internal investigation, but declined to comment further on the incident.

A full search of the vehicle hadn't been completed as of mid Tuesday afternoon. Currently no weapon has been found, Dorelus said.

New Haven Police were involved in the incident, said Acting Police Chief Otoniel Reyes, according to the New Haven Independent.
