Opening Of August Wilson's 'Gem of the Ocean' at Canal Dock Boathouse Friday Celebrated
Opening wraps August Wilson Festival, celebrating playwright's deep New Haven roots, Long Wharf Theater's "commitment to cultural equity."
NEW HAVEN, CT — The opening of August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean at the Canal Dock Boathouse was celebrated Thursday. It marks the culmination of the City of New Haven’s August Wilson Festival and the conclusion of the city’s 2026 Black History Month festivities.
Playwright August Wilson's relationship with New Haven runs deep, with six of the ten plays in his American Century Cycle premiering in the Elm City.
Gem of the Ocean, the first play in that celebrated cycle, returns to New Haven as the grand finale of the citywide August Wilson Celebration — a season-long series of film screenings, educational events and community gatherings organized by partners across the city in honor of Wilson's legacy. The event underscores New Haven's enduring connection to one of the greatest playwrights in American history and the city's commitment to making world-class culture accessible to all residents and uplifting every corner of the city, as outlined in New Haven's Cultural Equity Plan.

Directed by Connecticut native Cheyenne Barboza, Gem of the Ocean is set in 1904 Pittsburgh and follows Citizen Barlow, a newcomer from the South who arrives at the home of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old spiritual healer and former slave believed to carry the memory of the African diaspora. Haunted by guilt, Citizen is sent on a spiritual journey to the mythical City of Bones to confront his past and ancestry. As the community grapples with protest, injustice, and the cost of resistance, Citizen must choose the legacy he will carry forward. Lyrical, powerful, and deeply human, Gem of the Ocean is a story of reckoning and the long path to freedom.
Long Wharf Theatre's return to the Boathouse at Canal Dock—following the celebrated 2023 production of A View from the Bridge—also underscores the company's commitment to bringing world-class theater beyond traditional walls and into the community.
