Overtime to Drop as New Haven Police Hire
At first it was estimated to cost millions to staff the lockup facility, but that cost has come down sharply.

NEW HAVEN, CT — It looks like the New Haven Police Department won't have to pay as much after the state abandoned securing the pretrial detention facility at 1 Union Ave. Police at first estimated it would cost $2 million in overtime to staff the lockup facility per year. Now that estimate is $520,000 due to an increased number of officers that will lessen the need for overtime.
The department will be closer to its full staffing level after 30 recruits graduate in May, according to the New Haven Independent. Only two officers have retired in the past seven months, which will also help bolster the department's staffing levels.
