Permit Revoked For ‘The Place 2 Be’ Eatery In New Haven: State

The Elm Street restaurant needs the permit to operate.

NEW HAVEN, CT — The state has yanked the sales tax permit for a local restaurant, The Place 2 Be, and it can’t operate without one.

Tiffany V. Thiele, director of communications for the state Department of Revenue Services, confirmed Wednesday the New Haven location does not have a valid sales tax permit.

A sign at the New Haven restaurant dated March 23 indicates the sales and use tax permit has been revoked, and no sales can be transacted.

It is the latest in a series of setbacks for the business. This past summer, the state suspended the sales tax licenses of two other ‘The Place 2 Be’ restaurants, including one in West Hartford and one in Hartford.

Thiele said Wednesday that the New Haven, downtown Hartford, and West Hartford locations all do not have valid sales tax permits.

Thiele declined to disclose additional information or the reason for the state’s recent action against the New Haven restaurant.

In general, the state can revoke or suspend a permit due to noncompliance with sales tax rules and regulations.

Restaurant owner Gina Luari did not immediately respond to a request for a comment, and it is unclear if and when the issue will be resolved so the business can reopen.

Court filings reveal the business has been experiencing financial woes. The business has been the subject of litigation in recent years, including eviction proceedings and civil actions claiming nonpayment of rent.
