'Read Across New Haven' Continues With Book Giveaway For NHPS Students

Parable of the Sower, Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler and Ain't Burned All the Bright are among the books

NEW HAVEN, CT —Read Across New Haven continues with a book collection giveaway to every New Haven Public Schools student. The book distribution includes handing out four books to every student beginning Friday.

Superintendent Dr. Iline Tracey is challenging families to use these books to create and grow their personalized home libraries. She is sponsoring a competition for creative home libraries made from materials around the house, a dash of imagination, and a dose of personal style. Prizes will include gift certificates, books, art supplies, and more. Winners will be announced at the NHPS 2022 Back to School Rally in August.

Among the books to be distributed to high school students will be Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. Parable was chosen for the One City, One Read program associated with the city’s Festival of Arts and Ideas. Students in grades four, five, and six will receive Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler by Ibi Zoboi. High school students also will receive Ain’t Burned All the Bright by nationally renowned and best-selling author Jason Reynolds, who spoke to high school students across the city in February via Zoom.
