Switching Medicare Advantage Plans

You still have time to switch plans

The Medicare.gov website provides information about switching Medicare Advantage Plans. If your plan doesn’t meet your needs, you still have time to switch. “ From January 1 – March 31, if you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch plans or return to Original Medicare and join a separate Medicare drug plan. You can also add your providers while you’re comparing plans and find out if they participate in the plans you’re considering.”

For many people the Medicare Advantage Plan is a good option that provides for the care needs of the Medicare recipient and may also offer additional benefits not generally covered by Original Medicare such as dental, vision and/or footcare. However, for some people the Medicare Advantage Plan does not meet the Medicare recipient’s needs. Here are some situations where an Advantage Plan may not be the best choice:

  • Need for Specialized or Constant Care:
  • Desire to See Specific Specialists:
  • Frequent Travelers or Snowbirds:
  • You Value Stability in Coverage
  • You Anticipate High Medical Usage:
  • You Reside in Rural Areas

If you can afford the monthly premiums, Original Medicare with a Medigap plan generally offers more freedom to choose doctors and more predictable, lower costs for major illnesses, making it a better choice for those able to pay upfront for comprehensive coverage.
