Trumbull PD: New Haven Man Accused Of Robbery & 'Crime Spree'

TRUMBULL, CT — A 48-year-old New Haven man, who police said committed a robbery as part of a crime spree in Trumbull last year, was arrested on a warrant Thursday in connection with the incidents, according to authorities.

Last October, Jerome Campbell fled a motor vehicle crash, and then "robbed a motorist nearby, attempted to break into a home, and made his escape in a stolen vehicle," Trumbull police said. No injuries were reported.

According to a report from Trumbull Police Lt. Brian Weir, the incident is believed to have unfolded as follows:

On Saturday, October 17, 2020, at around 2:30 AM, the Trumbull Police were notified of a one-car motor vehicle accident on Main St. (Route 25), North of Route 111, where a vehicle ran off the road and was left abandoned. A man, later identified as Campbell, was seen running away from the accident scene carrying a handgun.

As officers were responding, they received a report of a man that had just been robbed at gunpoint, in the Route 25/ Route 111 commuter lot, where he was sitting in his vehicle. This victim had his vehicle’s back window smashed out, then a gun was pointed at him as the suspect demanded money. The victim complied and Campbell fled, running towards Broadway Road.

Around 3:00 AM, a Broadway Road resident reported hearing glass break at the rear of their home. Officers responded to this residence, but the suspect had already left. Police observed video footage from the home, and were able to identify Campbell as the suspect before he fled the area.

The Connecticut State Police were notified and assisted with investigating the robbery and search for Campbell. The Stratford and Trumbull Police Departments' K9 units were also notified and assisted in the search, but were unsuccessful.

Campbell then fled the area later that morning in a vehicle stolen from a construction site in the 6500 block of Main Street. That vehicle was later recovered in Bridgeport, police said, and detectives were able to link Campbell to it and the other crimes.

Police obtained a warrant, and Campbell was arrested at Bridgeport Superior Court on Thursday, where he was appearing on unrelated charges, and Trumbull police charged him with the following:

• First-degree robbery
• Third-degree larceny
• Second-degree criminal mischief
• Evading responsibility from a motor vehicle accident

He was held in lieu of a $75,000 and was arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court on Thursday.
