WATCH: Avelo Takes Off For 1st Florida Flight At Tweed New Haven

NEW HAVEN, CT — Avelo Airlines took flight at Tweed New Haven Airport Wednesday morning for its inaugural nonstop flight to Florida.

The first flight in the airlines' Boeing 737 is headed to Orlando International Airport.

"Welcome to the new Tweed. Day one," the regional airport posted on its Facebook page.

The two and a half hour flight departed at 11:03 a.m., according to FlightAware.

Avelo announced last week it added another direct flight to Florida. Beginning Jan. 13, 2022, Avelo Airlines will fly to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) from Tweed, with introductory fares starting at $49. This latest destination brings to six Avelo serves including Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Palm Beach and Tampa. The non-stop flights will operate Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

There are still seats on the 7:30 a.m. to Orlando Thursday and Friday for $59 with a return flight from $29 to $79, per the Avelo Airlines booking page.

Avelo and HVN are hiring more than 100 aviation professionals by the end of the year, who will be based at the airport.

Avelo is investing $1.2 million to help upgrade and modernize facilities and operations as part of an overall $100 million project at HVN, which will include a new terminal and extended runway spearheaded by airport operator Avports.
