NEW HAVEN, CT—A sleepy man who pistol-whipped his girlfriend was nabbed by police after she grabbed the gun when he dozed off, according to police.
Police were dispatched Nov. 6 around 1:22 a.m. to an apartment building on Quinnipiac Avenue.
The victim met officers at the door where she told them that Tyrell Robinson, 29 had pistol-whipped and threatened her earlier, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

She grabbed the pistol and hid it when he fell asleep, Hartman said.
Robinson had showed up when the woman was at her friend's house. She didn't want to cause a scene and went back to her apartment. Robinson was intoxicated and pushed her several times, Hartman said. He pointed his handgun at her and threatened to kill her at one point.

Robinson fell asleep while the two were lying in bed. That is when the victim seized the opportunity to hide the phone and call police.
The victim is a protected party from Robinson in a recent court order.
Officers recovered the gun and arrested Robinson, Hartman said. He is a convicted felon and was charged with threatening in the second degree, assault in the second degree, breach of peace in the second degree, violation of a protection order, carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a pistol and possession of a stolen firearm.
