From Yale New Haven Health: Blood Donations Are Urgently Needed

The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community.

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Accident and burn victims, sickle cell and heart surgery patients, and those battling cancer are just a few examples of those in need.

According to the American Red Cross, hospitals have seen a rise in trauma cases, organ transplants, elective surgeries, and emergency room visits over the past few months, prompting a national blood shortage. Patients who did not seek care during the height of the pandemic in the United States are now experiencing more advanced disease progression, which in some cases requires more blood transfusions. Dangerously low blood supply in the U.S. has forced some hospitals to postpone surgeries.

The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation.
