Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT
- A cohort of high-achieving psychology students from Eastern Connecticut State University was inducted into Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, on April 24. Among the inductees was Kelly Bobbitt of Newington, who majors in Psychology. Psi Chi's mission is to encourage excellence in scholarship and to foster the advancement of psychological science. Eastern students who are inducted into Psi Chi must declare a major or minor in psychology, have at least 12 credits of coursework in psychology and attain a 3.5 GPA in psychology and a 3.0 GPA overall.
- The Third Annual CREATE Conference at Eastern Connecticut State University took place on April 21. CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern," and is the University's premier conference showcasing student research and creative activity. The one-day conference featured more than 300 Eastern undergraduates who presented talks, professional posters, live music, dance performances, art and photography exhibits, documentary films and panel discussions.
Participants from Newington were Jena Cardoso, who majors in Mathematics and presented a poster titled "Bringing Down The House: The Effects Of Exponential Population Growth," and Nicole Rivera, who majors in Theatre and presented a poster titled "Design For Two Gentlemen of Verona." - Eastern Connecticut State University recently held its annual induction ceremony for Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. Marlene Suarez of Newington was one of the inductees. Suarez's major is Sociology. The mission of Alpha Kappa Delta is to acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems and other social and intellectual activities that lead to improvement in the human condition. Eligible students must hold a ranking of at least a junior, rank in the top 35 percent of their graduating class in general scholarship or must have accumulated the equivalent of an overall grade point average of at least 3.3. They also must have maintained the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA in sociology courses taken at the host institution prior to initiation.

- Lauren Porell, a Anthropology & Sociology major from Newington, has been inducted into the University of Vermont chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is a rare honor, and academics and employers recognize it as a mark of intellectual breadth and exceptional academic performance. UVM's chapter was chartered in 1848, making it the eleventh chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. It has a rich history in its own right, being the first chapter in the nation to elect women and African Americans to membership.
