Newington (July 22, 2016) — The Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) is pleased to receive a two year grant in the amount of $70,000 from the Peter Grayson Letz Fund for Animals and the Environment, which is administered by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut.
The grant will provide veterinary care, supplies and other resources to low-income pet owners, free veterinary services for animals being cared for by town animal control officers, and training for animal welfare professionals.

“This transformative grant is a smart investment in CHS’s role as a backbone organization in partnering with other community groups, towns and residents to ensure the well-being of animals in our region, said Community Foundation president and chief executive officer Maryam Elahi. “We believe so strongly in the capacity of CHS to move the needle in this area that we have provided a multiyear grant to help them plan beyond the current year."
CHS will use the funds to sustain wellness clinics for underserved pet owners living in Norwich and carry out extensive medical support services for pets impounded by municipal animal control. “This year’s program in Norwich has reached 196 animals to date, and 121 animals from New London County animal control officers have been served. It’s pretty exciting to see pets being helped that otherwise would not have had access to veterinary care without this program. We are grateful to the Foundation for their ongoing support for the wellness of companion animals in our communities,” said Gordon Willard, executive director of the Connecticut Humane Society.
The Connecticut Humane Society is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education and prevention of cruelty. The organization does not euthanize for time, space, breed or age.
