Historic New Britain Toy Shop To Close

A toy shop that's served the community for more than six decades will close next month.

NEW BRITAIN, CT — A New Britain toy store that's been around for more than 60 years will shut down, according to The Hartford Courant. A developer plans to replace Amato's Toy and Hobby with a six-story, upscale apartment building.

The 22,000-square-foot store is owned by Steve Amato and his wife, Sheri. Amato told The Courant that he's been in the business full time since 1974.

"I'm 65 now," he said. "I'm tired."

The New Britain shop will be offering sales from now until closing.

The store posted the following on Facebook:

"We wanted to let our customers know that, after 60+ years in New Britain, we have decided to close our store. When the opportunity presented itself to sell our building, we decided it was time to start the next chapter in our lives – retirement. It was a tough decision to make. It’s been fun. I have run this business since 1974, fresh out of high school. When my parents, Vinnie and Phyllis Amato, decided to retire in 2011, after almost 80 years, my wife and I took over.

"Monday, February 28, 2022, will be our last day in business in New Britain. We will be selling our inventory at a reduced price until then. Don’t miss this opportunity to stock up on the toys and hobbies you love. Even if you don’t want or need anything, please stop by to say good-bye and sign our guest book.

"We have so many customers who have also become friends and family and we will miss you all. Thank you for your loyalty and support."
