NEWINGTON, CT — A fire at a Berlin Turnpike motel Tuesday morning has sent four police officers, an adult and a child to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, according to Newington police.

The fire at the Grantmoor Motor Lodge began in a room on the first floor and spread to other parts of the motel. A Newington police officer conducting a routine patrol of the area noticed smoke coming from the building around 4:03 a.m. He called for help and began knocking on doors to evacuate the motel, Sgt. Christopher Perry said.

Firefighters had the blaze under control within 30 minutes.
