Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • The Department of Psychological Science at Eastern Connecticut State University held its 2017 Summer Research Institute on May 18-24 on the Eastern campus. This year's institute involved 10 undergraduate students and focused on the various factors that influence healthy eating. The institute was led by professors Jenna Scisco and Joseph Dracobly. Among the participants was Blake Mamaclay of Newington, whose independent study was titled "The Relationships Between Health Consciousness, Color Preference, and Perceived Healthiness." Mamaclay majors in Psychology.

Merrimack College, North Andover MA

  • Amanda Cefaratti of Newington, recently received a Master of Education from Merrimack College.

Springfield College, Springfield MA

  • Springfield College recently held its commencement weekend. At the graduate commencement, 658 master's degrees, six certificates of advanced graduate study, 15 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, 34 Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees, and five Doctor of Psychology degrees were awarded. At the undergraduate commencement, 873 bachelor's degrees were awarded for a two-day total of 1591 degrees. Lillian Solano of Newington earned a bachelor's of science degree in Human Services, and Brenda Suarez of Newington earned a master's of social work degree in Social Work.
  • Springfield College has named 10 students from Newington to the dean's list for academic excellence for the spring 2017 term: Mitchell Ambruso, Christian Zotti, Selina Mendes, Michael Rubalsky, Alexander Skonieczny, Mackenzie Luiz, Pablo Ortiz, Alison Mishou, Zachary Angelillo and Michael Strong. Criteria for selection to the dean's list requires that the student must have a minimum semester grade point average of 3.500 for the semester.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • Alicia Greenalch of Newington, a member of the class of 2018 majoring in actuarial mathematics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), was a member of a student team that recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in an off-campus location in Massachusetts. The project was titled Enhancing Communication at the YMCA Central Community Branch. In their project summary, the students wrote, "The goal of this study was to collaborate with the YMCA to assess and enhance forms of communication amongst staff and between staff and parents at the afterschool program."
