Newington Fall Leaf Collection To Begin Nov. 2 West Of Willard Avenue

Weather permitting, crews will make at least two passes on each street. Residents must keep leaves out of streets and trash bins.

Newington’s first fall leaf collection is scheduled for streets west of Willard Avenue from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 6, according to the Town of Newington. Streets east of Willard Avenue are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9, through Friday, Nov. 13. Weather may cause crews to arrive ahead of schedule or stay in an area longer than anticipated.

The town plans at least two passes through each street, weather permitting, and urges residents to rake leaves out as soon as possible because early snowfall hinders collection. Crews may appear in neighborhoods before the official start for training. They will return once the program begins, according to the town’s announcement.

Residents should rake leaves to the front of their property adjacent to the street without blocking sidewalks. Leaves and grass clippings should not be placed in the street. Leaves in barrels, plastic bags or cardboard boxes will not be picked up, nor will leaves mixed with branches, sticks, household trash or other foreign material.

State law requires leaves to be collected separately from trash, according to the announcement. Leaves must not go in rubbish or recycling containers, where they will not be picked up. Residents also may bring leaves to the Transfer Station from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays during its operating period from Wednesday, April 1, through Thursday, Dec. 31. Proof of residency is required.
