Newington Man Faces Child Sexual Assault, Child Porn Charges: Police

NEWINGTON, CT — A Newington man accused of sexually assaulting a minor and possessing child sexual abuse material has been extradited from Canada to Connecticut following a multiyear investigation, police said Thursday morning, Sept. 3.

Scott Hunter Scharr, 24, was returned to the United States on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and turned over to Newington police detectives, according to the Newington Police Department.

The investigation began in January 2023 after police received information concerning the possible sexual assault of a minor and possession of child pornography by a Newington resident, later identified as Scharr.

Police said the investigation resulted in two arrest warrants. During the investigation, authorities learned Scharr had fled to Canada and was living under the name "Hunter Scott."

After what Newington police described as years of collaboration with federal authorities and Canadian law enforcement, Scharr was taken into custody in Canada in December 2025.

He was extradited to the United States with assistance from the New Britain State's Attorney's Office, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, according to Newington police.

Scharr faces the following charges:

• Two counts of criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault.
• Commercial sexual abuse of a minor.
• Two counts of risk of injury to a minor.
• Promoting a minor in an obscene performance.
• First-degree illegal possession of child sexual abuse material.

Scharr was being held on a combined $1 million bond stemming from the two arrest warrants, police said.

He was scheduled to appear Thursday, Sept. 3, in New Britain Superior Court.
