Newington Obituary: Lois Derr, 86

Lois Patricia (Politis) Derr beloved wife of Monroe Hurst Derr passed away suddenly and peacefully October 28, 2016. Lois was a longtime resident of Newington prior to retiring to Shaftsbury, VT several years ago.

Lois was born in New Britain, the daughter of William Vincent & Gertrude (Williams) Politis on March 17, 1930. She attended local schools, graduating from high school in 1947. Her early work was at Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. in New Britain. Later in life she was the personal financial assistant to Albert Shulman.

Lois had been a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in New Britain where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She and Monroe met as members of the youth group at St. Mark's and they married on October 22, 1949. Lois was very active in the Cub Scout program when her three boys were young and she was a Den Mother for many years.

Lois and her family and friends enjoyed many happy days by their pool in Newington. In later years they toured the picturesque sights of Vermont, collecting decorative scarecrows on their travels.

Lois leaves her three sons, who will miss her greatly, William Derr and wife Nancy of Berlin, Richard Derr and wife Esther of West Simsbury and Kenneth Derr of New Britain. She also leaves three cherished grandchildren Travis and Nicole Derr of South Berwick, ME, Nicholas and Charlotte Derr of Buffalo, NY and Alexis Derr and her husband Kevin Granger of Simsbury. She also leaves her treasured great grandchildren – Addison & Lilah and Penelope, Georgia & Roman as well as many nieces and nephews. Lois is survived by her brother Richard Politis and his wife Charlotte of Plainville, she was predeceased by her brother Ronald Politis of East Hartford.

Calling hours will be Friday, November 4th at Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Burial will be private in West Meadow Cemetery.
