Newington PD Warns Of Phone Scam

The NPD says a caller is claiming to be a police lieutenant and is asking for money in exchange for amnesty.

NEWINGTON, CT — Local police are warning the public of a phone scam circulating around town involving someone posing as a member of the department.

According to the Newington Police Department, it involves a caller posing as a lieutenant with NPD who is making false legal claims to potential victims, such as having unpaid tickets or an active arrest warrant.

The suspect will then say the matters can be resolved in exchange for monetary funds, police said.

Officers had an obvious message about the situation.

"Please remember not to give personal or financial information over the phone to an unknown individual," wrote the department Thursday morning.

"The Newington Police Department will never call you and demand money, gift cards, etc. in an attempt to resolve legal matters."
