Newington Revenue Clerk Charged With Forgery and Larceny

She is accused of using numerous forged coupons to defraud a West Hartford supermarket, according to police.

NEWINGTON, CT — An employee in the Newington revenue collector's office was arrested by West Hartford police on charges she repeatedly used forged coupons at a local supermarket.

Rosemarie Taber, 52, was charged with second-degree forgery, sixth-degree larceny and criminal impersonation. She was released on $1,500 nonsurety bond, and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

On Dec. 27, West Hartford police were contacted by personnel at the Stop & Shop supermarket about a suspect that had used forged coupons in the store. Stop & Shop reported that they recognized the suspect and they believed she had done this a number of times before, Lt. Eric Rocheleau said.

The suspect had already been in the store once earlier that day, and it was reported the coupons being used were not originals, but had been forged in order to purchase goods at a highly discounted amount, Rocheleau said.

Officers made contact with the owner of the loyalty card being used and learned that the card was being used by Taber instead. Police located Taber and took her into custody, Rocheleau said.

"The scheme is believed to have been conducted for an extended period of time and is currently under investigation," Rocheleau said, adding the department did not release a suspected dollar amount involved.

Taber is listed on the Town of Newington web site as being a part-time clerk in the revenue collector's office.
