Prius Gang Steals SUV At Newington Gas Station: Police

NEWINGTON/HARTFORD, CT — A red Toyota Prius full of gun-wielding car thief suspects are reportedly in custody following a Saturday night incident that started in Newington and ended in Hartford.

The Hartford Police Department Sunday said officers engaged in a foot pursuit with three adult suspects and one juvenile Saturday night.

HPD officials said members of the Greater Hartford Regional Auto Theft Task Force saw a carjacked Jeep Grand Cherokee, reported stolen in Newington, on Market Street in Hartford that night.

Two guns were recovered after police chased the unidentified suspects.

According to the Newington Police Department, the incident began at 8:57 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at the Sunoco station on 430 New Britain Ave..

The owner of the Jeep reported that he parked the vehicle at the gas pumps and entered the building inside, Newington police said.

That's when he noticed a red Toyota Prius pull up to his unoccupied vehicle and noticed they opened the Jeep's door, police said.

When the Jeep's owner ran out to confront the car thieves, they pointed handguns at the person, prompting the person to run away, according to the NPD.

Newington police said no shots were fired and no one was injured in the incident, which saw the suspects drive off in the Jeep and Newington police put out an alert on the stolen vehicle.

Shortly thereafter, Hartford police reported they recovered the Jeep at 410 Market St., Newington police said.

The suspects have yet to be identified and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
