NEW LONDON, CT — Police are warning residents about a phone scam circulating in the community.
"In recent days, officers have responded to three separate reports of this scam, which appears to be primarily targeting Spanish-speaking residents and elderly family members," police said.
Callers contact victims claiming that a family member — often a daughter or granddaughter — has been involved in an "incident" or "accident." The caller then impersonates law enforcement, identifying himself as "Officer" and demands money be delivered in person at a public location to resolve the situation, police said.
Police the scammers are using a TextNow number that becomes "out of service" when victims attempt to call back.
Police said if you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and report the call to police.
