NEW LONDON, CT — Six people were displaced following a fire at an apartment building Monday afternoon, according to fire officials.
Firefighters were dispatched at 4:18 p.m. to a reported structure fire on Hope Street.
Crews arrived three minutes later and found smoke coming from a second-floor apartment.
Firefighters found that one of the people inside had already extinguished most of the fire. Crews completed extinguishing the blaze and checked to see that it had not spread.
Most of the fire damage was confined to the kitchen area, though the rest of the apartment had been damaged by smoke.
A resident had inhaled a significant amount of smoke. Emergency personnel evaluated the resident, who declined to be taken to the hospital.
Six residents of the apartment have been temporarily displaced from their home. The American Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing and other immediate needs.
The fire marshal is conducting an investigation.
