Crews arrived to find heavy fire showing from the two-family home's first and second floors as well as the attic.

The fire had also extended along the exterior siding of the neighboring two-family home at 3-5 Cutler St.

Firefighters prevented the blaze from extending into the neighboring home, limiting the damage to the building's exterior.

The Colman Street home sustained "very significant damage as a result of the fire," according to fire officials.

The fire department brought in off-duty firefighters and mutual aid companies to assist in the emergency.

No firefighters were injured.

Two people from the home were taken to the hospital for reported minor injuries.

The American Red Cross is assisting four displaced residents with emergency housing and other immediate needs.

Mutual aid was provided by the Waterford Fire Department, the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, the Electric Boat Fire Department, the Naval Submarine Base Fire Department, the Norwich Fire Department and Groton EMS.

Mutual aid companies also provided station coverage throughout the city, allowing for emergency response while New London crews dealt with the fire.

A team including the fire marshal and police detectives are investigating the blaze.
