Elderly Couple Dies In New London House Fire; IDs Released: Reports

NEW LONDON, CT — A house fire was reported in New London late Monday night that led to the death of a husband and wife, according to WTNH News-8.

The fire broke out at around 11:20 p.m. on the 40 block of Chapel Drive.

Two people were trapped inside the building when firefighters arrived,

Two caretakers also in the home at the time were able to escape.

Daniel Moalli, 90, and Glenna Moalli, 77, died in the blaze, NBC CT reported.

A firefighter was also hospitalized for a hand injury. The firefighter underwent minor surgery and was released, according to NBC CT. Firefighters stayed at the scene for a few hours.

The home was severely damaged and is not inhabitable. The Connecticut State Fire Marshal, the New London Fire Marshal and New London Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire.

Daniel and Glenna Moalli both worked at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

The hospital shared the following statement:

"We are saddened by the passing of Dr. Moalli, a beloved retired physician who dedicated many years of service to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, along with his wife, Glenna, who worked in the Infectious Diseases department.

"On behalf of our hospital family, we extend our heartfelt condolences to their family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with them. We are grateful for their lasting contributions and honor their legacy with gratitude and respect."
