Teen Moped Rider Killed In Crash With Truck, New London Police Say

NEW LONDON, CT — A 17-year-old moped rider was killed in a crash involving a truck on Sunday, according to police.

Police received a call at 5:08 p.m. reporting an accident with injuries in the area of Ocean Avenue and Beech Drive.

Officers found the injured moped rider and provided medical aid. The teen was then taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital where he was declared dead.

Police are not releasing the teen's identity.

"The New London Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young man lost in this tragic incident," police wrote in a statement.

New London Mayor Michael Passero released the following statement in the aftermath of the accident:

"My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends mourning the loss of a 17-year-old New London High School graduate who was killed tragically in a motor vehicle accident Sunday evening. Let us hold his loved ones close in our thoughts and prayers and honor their need for privacy as they navigate this difficult time. I am also keeping the other driver and his family in my thoughts and prayers and wishing them strength.

"This tragic event has profoundly affected all those involved, resulting in lasting impacts on their lives. You can be assured that the New London Police will provide a detailed report following a thorough investigation. I urge everyone to refrain from making judgments and to allow the facts to emerge before reaching any conclusions.

"We are a close and compassionate community, and we are called upon once again to bring comfort to everyone impacted by this devastating loss."

The New London Police Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating.
