Man Charged With Reckless Driving In Dirt Bike Crackdown, New London Police Say

NEW LONDON, CT —A man was arrested and his bike seized Monday, according to New London police.

Police went to the Quaker Hill section of Waterford address to arrest Christopher Pond, 22.

The arrest was tied to "an ongoing investigation into the illegal and reckless operation of a dirt bike on city streets over the past several months," police said in a statement.

The reckless use of dirt bikes on city streets has caused "significant public safety concerns," according to police.

Pond was taken into custody without incident. Police seized a black and blue Yamaha YZF 450 dirt bike as evidence.

Pond was charged with six counts each of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle under suspension.

He was released after posting $10,000 cash/surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Oct. 5.

"The reckless operation of dirt bikes and ATVs on our public roadways places our residents, motorists, and the operators themselves in serious danger," Police Chief Brian M. Wright said in a statement. "This arrest reflects our continued commitment to holding accountable those who disregard public safety, and I want to thank the Waterford Police Department for their partnership in bringing this investigation to a successful resolution. We will continue to aggressively investigate and pursue charges against individuals who endanger our community in this manner."

Police said the public can help by doing the following:

• Capturing photos or videos of illegal riders, bikes, or storage locations. They cautioned only to do so if it is "completely safe and poses no risk to you." Police said to never confront riders or put yourself in harm's way.
• Send tips directly to police. You can email photos, videos and information to publicportal@newlondonct.gov.
• Report anonymously via Tip411. Text "NLPDTIP" followed by your information to 847411.

Police said they need to know who the riders are, where the dirt bikes and ATVs are being stored, and when and where illegal riding is occurring.

"Every tip — no matter how small — may help us shut down this dangerous activity," police said. "With your help, we can stop this dangerous behavior before tragedy strikes."
