NEW LONDON, CT — Police are seeking to identify a man accused of throwing a dog over a six-foot-high perimeter fence.
The incident occurred at the municipal animal shelter on Chester Street in the early morning hours Monday.
Safety cameras at the animal control facility captured an unidentified man lifting the dog over the shelter's six-foot fence and leaving the animal unattended on the property at 1:49 a.m.
The frightened dog was later discovered hiding behind a bush inside the shelter grounds, police said.
An animal control officer coaxed the animal out from its hiding place. The dog is now safe, has been evaluated, and is receiving care at the facility.
Police said that abandoning an animal the way the man did may be a violation of the state's animal cruelty and abandonment laws.

Shelter officials reminded the public that animal control accepts surrendered animals through proper intake procedures during business hours, and emergency arrangements can be made by phone.
There is never a need to abandon an animal in a way that puts it at risk of injury or trauma, shelter officials said.
