NEW LONDON, CT — Drivers in New London should expect detours and possible delays beginning Tuesday as a portion of Crystal Avenue closes for construction work on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.
The closure, which will remain in effect through Nov. 13, affects Crystal Avenue near State Pier Road, beneath the bridge near Lewis Street, according to the New London Police Department.
The work is part of the Connecticut Department of Transportation's ongoing rehabilitation of the northbound Interstate 95 bridge over the Thames River.
Through traffic will be prohibited in the construction area, but residents and businesses along Crystal Avenue will continue to have local access.
State Pier Road will remain open throughout the project. Pedestrian access will also be maintained, with a walkway at least 4 feet wide.
Police advised drivers to allow extra travel time, particularly during peak hours, and avoid the area when possible.
Drivers should follow posted detour signs rather than GPS directions, which may not reflect the temporary traffic changes.
Police said emergency services and transit providers have been notified of the closure. Emergency response will not be affected.
