New Milford Council To Consider $529,200 Road Grant, $500,000 School Funding And River Road Paving

New Milford Town Council will review a $529,200 road grant, $500,000 in school funding and River Road paving on Oct. 13.

NEW MILFORD, CT — The New Milford Town Council will consider accepting a $529,200 state road improvement grant, discuss paving a section of River Road in Gaylordsville and set a possible November vote on $500,000 in additional funding for school improvements when it meets Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The council is also scheduled to consider a $2,880 grant for the Senior Center, a proposed tax appeal settlement and appointments to the New Milford Conservation Commission.

The town has been awarded $529,200 through Connecticut's Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program, according to a memorandum from Grants and Compliance Specialist Victoria Carvalho.

The funding would support improvements at Grove Street and Hine Hill Road, including installation of a new traffic signal.

The council will discuss and possibly vote on accepting the grant.

River Road Paving Proposed

Public Works officials are requesting authorization to pave approximately 1,500 feet of River Road in Gaylordsville.

According to an Oct. 7 memorandum from Road Design Engineer Chuck Ballard, the town recently replaced and installed approximately 1,510 linear feet of drainage pipe along the northernmost section of the road.

The drainage work was undertaken in response to residents' concerns about stormwater management and property damage.

Public Works is proposing to pave the affected section to provide a finished road surface over the new drainage infrastructure and extend the useful life of the improvements.

$500,000 School Funding Request Could Go To Town Meeting

The council will consider scheduling a Nov. 9 town meeting to vote on transferring $500,000 from the Waste Management Fund toward the New Milford High School Tennis Court Project.

The proposal would redirect part of the high school's original $1.1 million tennis court allocation to other school improvements:

The Board of Education approved the proposed reallocation Sept. 15, according to a letter from board Chair Leslie Sarich.

The funding change would require approval by the Town Council, Board of Finance and Town Meeting.

The council's Oct. 13 agenda calls for setting a town meeting date, not final approval of the transfer.

Senior Center Grant And Tax Appeal

The council will consider accepting a $2,880 grant awarded to the New Milford Senior Center through the Connecticut Community Care/Connecticut Age Well Collaborative's Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance program.

According to Carvalho, the grant would support a 24-week therapeutic movement program intended to improve balance, mobility and daily functioning while helping prevent falls.

Mayor Pete Bass is also scheduled to request an executive session concerning a tax appeal involving Baron House New Milford LLC.

The agenda calls for inviting Town Attorney Randy DiBella and Tax Assessor Brian Lastra into the executive session. No proposed settlement terms are included.

Other Council Business

The council will consider appointing William Crispo of Charterhouse Road to the New Milford Conservation Commission for a term ending Jan. 31, 2030.

Other business includes a proposed 2027 Town Council meeting schedule, discussion of the town's nonprofit committee and approval of tax refunds totaling $6,202.89.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the E. Paul Martin Room at New Milford Town Hall, 10 Main St..

Residents can watch the meeting through the town's Facebook page or YouTube channel.

The next regular Town Council meeting is scheduled for Oct. 26.
